I was doing some market research recently, and one of the participants said she was having trouble getting her employees to document their processes. Their excuse was they aren’t ‘process people’.
That’s a new one on me 😳🤭🤣
First let me say that when it’s YOUR business, YOUR employees need to get on YOUR page. If documenting processes are a part of their required duties, there’s no room for excuses. But maybe that’s just the mighty, mighty Air Force in me 🤷🏽♀️😂
Now for the truth: We’re ALL process people. Otherwise, no one gets anything done. We’ll each have our unique approach to our duties and responsibilities, but we’re process people at our core.
So my point is two-fold:
- If you’re going to build out your SOPs in-house (which I don’t recommend, but that’s another post for another day), make it plain to your employees that they’re required to document how they do what they do. It’s vital for your operational health, and has a positive impact on revenue AND their salaries. If that’s not enough motivation, I don’t know what is!
- There are people who are naturally spectacular at extracting your genius and creating a signature system that’s smooth, organized, and streamlined (hint: I’m one of them). A system that you can consistently deliver while honoring your time, energy, lifestyle needs and purpose in this world. A system that makes it easier to scale to that next bold revenue goal. That’s who you should call for all things business process documentation and improvement 😉
